Stevia rebaudiana is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family, native to the alpine grasslands at the junction of Paraguay and Brazil in South America. Its leaves contain a natural sweetening ingredient, steviol glycosides, which are 200-300 times sweeter than sucrose and have only 1/300 calories. Since its introduction to China in 1977, stevia has become an important natural sugar substitute in the world and is widely used in food, medicine and health products.
