What is menthol?
A terpene, also known as menthol. Molecular formula C10H20O, L-menthol is colorless transparent needle-like crystal; Melting point 44ºC, boiling point 216.4ºC, specific rotation -48°; Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, chloroform. Racemic menthol is colorless transparent needle-like crystal. Melting point 38ºC, boiling point 216ºC; Soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene. Menthol is hydrogenated to p-alkane; Menthone was prepared by oxidation or catalytic dehydrogenation of chromic acid. Racemic menthol can be resolved by benzoesterification. Menthol can be isolated from peppermint oil or made from citronellol or thymol. Menthol is an important spice. Due to its cooling effect, levolmenthol is widely used in cigarettes, cosmetics, toothpaste, chewing gum, sweets and medicines, and in applying agents [exerting local itching, pain relief, cooling (mechanism: stimulating the cold receptors on the skin but not causing actual temperature change) and slight local anesthesia, and also acting as an osmotic agent
