Hamamelis virginiana is a deciduous shrub native to North America. Its leaves, bark and branches are rich in tannic acid, gallic acid and flavonoids. The extract obtained through water distillation, ethanol or propylene glycol extraction has powerful astringent, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and is widely used in skin care products, pharmaceutical preparations and personal care products, and is hailed as a "natural skin emergency ingredient".
