β-Carotene, named after the Latin word for carrot, is a member of a family of natural chemicals (such as carotenes or carotenoids). It is found in large quantities in plants and gives fruits and vegetables their rich yellow and orange colors.
β-Carotene (C40H56) is a carotenoid, an orange-yellow fat-soluble compound. It is the most common and stable natural pigment in nature.

1. Antioxidant and free radical scavenger β-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that can directly neutralize free radicals, prevent their chain reactions, and reduce oxidative damage to cells.
2. Protect visual health β-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A. After being converted into vitamin A in the body, it participates in the synthesis of rhodopsin, improves dark adaptation ability, and prevents night blindness, dry eyes and corneal lesions.
3. Enhance immune function β-carotene promotes immunoglobulin production after being converted into vitamin A, enhances mucosal barrier function, reduces the risk of respiratory infections, and supports immune cell activity. It is especially important for people with low immune function (such as patients with digestive system diseases).
4. Maintain skin health Protect skin cells from ultraviolet damage, reduce the symptoms of photosensitive skin diseases (such as erythropoietic protoporphyria), and improve dry skin and keratinization. Its antioxidant properties can also delay skin aging and lighten spots.
5. Cardiovascular and cancer prevention Reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis by reducing the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein.
1. Nutritional supplements and dietary sources
Natural foods: Green vegetables (spinach, broccoli), carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes, etc. are rich in beta-carotene. Daily intake of more than 4 servings can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Dietary supplements: Suitable for people with impaired vision and low immunity. Supplementation should be done under the guidance of professionals to avoid overdose.
2. Food industry applications
Natural colorants: As orange/red pigments, they are widely used in beverages, dairy products, baked goods, seasonings, etc., and are safer to replace synthetic pigments.
Nutritional enhancers: Added to functional foods to enhance antioxidant and vitamin A precursor values.
3. Clinical and health care
Treatment of photosensitive skin diseases: Used to relieve solar dermatitis and eczema, it takes several weeks to take effect.
Prevention of senile diseases: Such as cataracts and cardiovascular diseases, delaying the course of the disease through antioxidant mechanisms.
4. Animal feed additives
As feed ingredients, it can promote animal growth, enhance reproductive capacity, and improve the color of products (such as egg yolks and meat).
