Beta-Boswellic Acid is a pentacyclic triterpene compound with the chemical formula C30H48O3, a molecular weight of 456.71, and a CAS number of 631-69-6. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline solid, with a melting point of 130-135ºC and a boiling point of 556°C (predicted value). It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol.
Structural features: It has a β configuration and is more active than the α isomer, especially excelling in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Source:
It is mainly extracted from the resin of frankincense trees (such as Boswellia serrata and Boswellia carteri). The active components of different tree species vary significantly:
Boswellia serrata (Frankincense from India) : The content of AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-one -β -frankinic acid) is approximately 1%, but long-term use can improve joint structure.
Boswellia carteri (African frankincense) : With an AKBA content as high as 3.3%, it is suitable for high-purity extraction.

Anti-inflammatory and immune regulation: Inhibits 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), leukotriene synthesis and NF-κB pathway, reduces the release of pro-inflammatory factors (such as IL-1β, TNF-α), and alleviates chronic inflammation.
Antioxidation: Eliminate free radicals, protect cell membranes, and delay oxidative stress damage.
Anti-tumor: It induces apoptosis of cancer cells and inhibits angiogenesis. Preclinical studies have shown that it is effective against glioblastoma, leukemia, etc.
Neuroprotection: By regulating glutamate and kynurenine levels, it improves depressive-like behaviors in Alzheimer's disease models.
Joint health
Short-term efficacy: High-purity AKBA (70%) can provide rapid pain relief, and the effect of a single application lasts for 5 to 6 hours.
Long-term repair: Continuous administration of standardized extract (20% AKBA) for 6 months significantly increased cartilage volume (12%) and joint space (8%).
