Cedar extract is derived from the wood or heartwood of Juniperus virginiana or Cedrus atlantica, a plant of the Cypress family, and is prepared by steam distillation or solvent extraction. Its main active ingredients include α -cedarene, cedaryl alcohol and rohamberyl, which have a warm, woody aroma and multiple biological activities. Cedar was regarded as a sacred plant in ancient Egyptian and Native American cultures of North America, used for preservation, pest control and health care. In modern applications, its extracts are widely used in medicine, cosmetics, aromatherapy and agriculture.
