Terminalia chebula, also known as Tibetan green fruit and Indian terminalia, is a plant of the genus Terminalia of the Combretaceae family. It is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia and is widely distributed in India, Nepal, Yunnan, China, etc. It is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine (core ingredient of Triphala formula) and Tibetan medicine system. Its extract mainly comes from dried mature fruits, and the core active ingredients include:
• Tannins (accounting for 30-45%):
• Chebulagic acid: a strong antioxidant, inhibits lipid peroxidation (ORAC value ≥35,000 μmol TE/g).
• Chebulinic acid: antiviral (such as HSV-1, influenza virus) and anti-tumor activity.
• Triterpenes: such as Arjunolic acid, anti-inflammatory and liver protection.
• Phenolic acids: Gallic acid, Ellagic acid, scavenging free radicals and inhibiting tyrosinase.
• Anthraquinones: Mild laxative ingredients (such as rhein) that regulate intestinal motility.

1. Antioxidant and anti-aging
• Chebulic acid upregulates superoxide dismutase (SOD) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) by activating the Nrf2/ARE pathway
• Inhibits collagenase and elastase, delaying the formation of skin wrinkles
2. Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory
• Inhibits NF-κB and MAPK pathways, reduces pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF-α and IL-6
• Enhances macrophage phagocytic activity and improves the effect of vaccine adjuvants
3. Antibacterial and antiviral
• The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) for drug-resistant bacteria (such as MRSA) is 0.5-1mg/mL, destroying biofilm formation.
• Chebulic acid inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase activity (IC50=12μM)
4. Digestive health
• Bidirectional regulation of intestinal function: low doses relieve diarrhea (inhibit intestinal fluid secretion), and high doses promote defecation (stimulate intestinal nerve plexus).
• Regulate intestinal flora: increase the abundance of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, and reduce pathogenic Escherichia coli
5. Liver protection and detoxification
• Activate the Nrf2 pathway to promote glutathione (GSH) regeneration and reduce ALT/AST levels in alcoholic liver damage
• Chelate heavy metals (such as lead and cadmium) and excrete them through feces
1. Medicines and health products
• Liver protection tablets: for people with alcoholic liver damage.
• Intestinal regulation capsules: compounded with probiotics (Lactobacillus + Bifidobacterium) to improve IBS and constipation.
• Antiviral spray: 1% chebulic acid + zinc ion, for oral herpes or flu prevention.
2. Skin care products and oral care
• Anti-aging essence: 0.5-2% chebulic acid extract + hyaluronic acid, reduce UV-induced DNA damage.
• Whitening toothpaste: chebulic ellagic acid (0.3%) + hydroxyapatite, inhibit plaque and pigmentation.
3. Food and agriculture
• Natural preservatives: 0.05% extract replaces sodium benzoate to extend the shelf life of bread and juice.
• Feed additive: 0.1% terminalia chebula powder reduces the infection rate of Salmonella in poultry
4. Environmental protection and industry
• Heavy metal adsorbent: Terminalia chebula shell activated carbon treats industrial wastewater (lead adsorption capacity reaches 200mg/g).
